Peloton teams with San Diego Port Tenants Association to bring platooning to San Diego

Mountain View, CA – The San Diego Port Tenants Association (SDPTA) announced yesterday that it has received a $5.9 million grant under the California Energy Commission’s “Freight Projects at California Seaports” program.  Peloton Technology is excited to be part of the SDPTA team!  Our focus is on implementing a set of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) solutions for the team.  For the project, which will take place between 2017 and 2019, Peloton will work with one or more selected fleets to equip a group of heavy-duty trucks serving the Port with platooning systems. We will also work with the SDPTA and San Diego officials to conduct a trial of Freight Signal Priority (FSP) technology, which will enable freight vehicles to receive priority for green lights at signalized intersections on arterial roads under appropriate traffic conditions. California and Arizona researchers have found that FSP can alleviate bottlenecks, increase traffic throughput significantly and reduce emissions.

In addition to the ITS elements of the project, the SDPTA grant will go towards the development and deployment of 10 zero-emission vehicles made by several EV manufacturers. Congratulations to the SDPTA and all members of the project team!

We look forward to working on this second public-private project in our home state, along with an ongoing truck platooning research project that launched in 2013 in partnership with the Federal Highways Administration, Caltrans, UC Berkeley PATH and industry partners.
